William Herbert Pruitt

William Herbert Pruitt, known to everyone as Herb, passed away on September 30, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.  Herb was a devout Christian and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and neighbor.

Herb is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 73 ½ years, Mary, one daughter, Linda Vaughn and her husband Ronnie, son, Robin Pruitt and his wife Kathy. He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren and their spouses Barton & Stacy Vaughn, Bradley & Cheyenne Vaughn, Britney (Vaughn) & Matthew Graves, Matthew & Samantha Pruitt, Michael & McKenna Pruitt, and Christopher & Sarah Pruitt. He is also survived by 13 great grandchildren with 1 more on the way.

Herb was born in Cullman, Alabama on November 1, 1926. He was drafted near the end of World War II forcing him to give up his football scholarship to Auburn. He served in the United States Army for 18 months. Fourteen of those were in Germany. On his return to the states he pursued and married his beautiful Mary Glenn Barton.

Herb and Mary owned and operated “Herb’s Fabrics” in Ocoee for over 20 years.

In 1952, Mary and Herb visited Florida in the month of December and he knew this was the place for them because he could waterski year-round. He asked Southern Bell for a transfer to Orlando where he lived the rest of his life. He retired at the age of 55.  Herb served as a deacon and later an elder for West Orange Church of Christ. After his retirement he worked full time as an elder for the Church until he was 81 years old.

Herb’s light hearted sense of humor entertained everyone who knew him. He was always full of joy and he shared it with others. His servant heart was always ready to be used. He will be deeply missed.

The family will be receiving friends at Concord Street Church of Christ, located at 626 E. Concord St., Orlando on Saturday, October 3rd at 1:00 pm.  The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Gotha.
