Jeanne E. Horn, age 82, of Orlando, passed away Thursday, April 25th, 2013. Her experience record with the physically challenged spans more than 50 years, with 35 years spent as a Sign Language Interpreter for the hearing impaired. Born in Cliff, Long Island, NY, the daughter of Wesley and Jeanne Amanda (Mathews) Van Dyke, she attended and was certified at Gallaudet College for the Deaf in Washington, DC as a sign language interpreter. Jeanne's career led her to employment with the Helen Keller Center for the Deaf/Blind, Disney World, the Easter Seal Society, a Daycare Center for cocaine babies, Director of Physically Challenged Services at a three campus college, and many others.
As a volunteer, Jeanne's services were invaluable at nursing homes and as a certified trainer with the Department of Health and Rehabilitation Serices of Central Florida. Jean's church is St. Mary of the Angels Episcopal and she has served in many other denominations as a volunteer sign language interpreter. Her major areas of interest were in story-telling, teaching Bible studies and leading current events discussions. She also led in-service training workshops and communications classes for Village church members at Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee, doing 20 one-on-one visits per week with the residents. Many have benefited from her expertise inclusive of physicians offices, emergency rooms, ICUs, Hospice, etc. and her services were free of charge.
Jeanne is predeceased by her son David, who was a Long Island Fire Department Chief and her son Kenneth who was a show director of Walt Disney World in Orlando. Another piece of interesting data bout her family is that her great grandmother was an American Indian who was killed in a prairie fire. Jeanne leaves to cherish her memory, friend and Health Surrogate Bruce Wohl of Orlando and friend and Executor Alexandra (Sandy) Harp., plus a host of other sorrowing friends. She will be missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
