J. Gregory McNerney, 60, a long time resident of Orlando and native of Washington D.C. passed away quietly in his sleep on Wednesday January 6 with his family at his side. Mr. McNerney is survived by his loving wife and daughters, Laura Henline McNerney, Megan Louise and Melissa Anne, who cared for him through a series of debilitating illnesses. Survivors also include Mr. McNerney's brothers and sisters Michael J. McNerney (Connie) of Ft. Lauderdale, Louise E. Nehl (Lou) of Houston, Texas, Kathleen M. Harris (John) of Orlando, Sharon T. Venker (Thomas) of St. Louis, Missouri, Sheila M. Leacock (Robert) of Orlando, Kevin A. McNerney (Ann) and Robert A. McNerney (Christine) both of Oakton, Virginia, more than 55 nieces and nephews, and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. Mr. McNerney was pre-deceased by his parents Arthur T. and Mary Jane McNerney, his brother Patrick, as well as the Reverend David T. Madden S.J., beloved family priest.
Greg McNerney was born in Washington D.C. where he attended St. John's College High School for two years before moving to Indialantic, Florida where he went on to graduate from Melbourne High School, and was recognized as the Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1967. He was an exceptional athlete, winning a scholarship for basketball, track and cross country to East Carolina University. Greg was well known in AAU basketball circles in Orlando and throughout the state where he competed until the 1980s. In later years he was a fixture in Orlando youth athletics coaching girls softball and basketball. The McNerneys are long time members of the Holy Family Catholic Church parish and community.
Mr. McNerney spent the majority of his career as a pool and spa designer and later as an executive with Funds for Life, an insurance business.
Visiting hours will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Church on Friday, January 8 from 6 to 8 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm, followed by interment at Dr. Phillips Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Greg's family requests gifts are made to the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA, Greg McNerney Memorial Fund in support of youth athletics, 7000 Dr. Phillips Blvd., Orlando, FL 32819; or, The Barr foundation Amputee Assistance Fund, 136 NE Olive Way, Boca Raton, FL 33432.

I am very sad to hear of Greg's passing. We were friends for many years as we attendrd St. Jane De Chantal together in Bethesda, Md. He came over and visted me on his last trip north in October. I have many fond memories of Greg. He had a good heart and a great laugh.I will miss you Greg, You and your family will always be in my thoughts and prayers.
I Went to mass for you today on your 1 year passing date. I prayed that God grant you peace and happiness in his magnificant kingdom.
