Magdalena Marrone

Mrs. Magdalena Marrone, age 82, of Mulberry, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 in Orlando. Magdalena was born in India, Yugoslavia, on January 28, 1927, the daughter of the late Joseph and Maria (Gerlinger) Kratz. She moved to Central Florida from New York in 1973 and was a Homemaker. She leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved husband Anthony Marrone of Orlando; two daughters, Diane Carlucci, Denise Papke both of Orlando, FL; a son, William Marrone of Lithia, FL; sister, Theresa Tuma of Bethel, NY; 5 grandchildren, Joseph Carlucci, Kevin Marrone, Lisa Sawyer, Laura Curtis, Bobby Papke, 10 great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Anthony and Kaitlyn Papke, Lindsay Spencer, Ryan Sawyer, Jeremy, Justin, and Jordin Carlucci-Harris, Ethan and Elise Marrone. The family will be receiving friends at Dobbs Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 from 7-9 PM. A service will be held at 8:00 PM on Tuesday. Interment will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

Donald Erwin Shaver


August 21, 2009, Dr. Donald Erwin Shaver died at the age of 84 in Orlando, Florida. Formerly of Baldwinsville, NY, he was a Chiropractor there for 35 years. Donald was predeceased by his loving wife, Betty Shaver. He is survived by his children, Gail (Steve) Elliott, Temecula, Ca., Kathy (Pete)Ahern, Clermont, Fl., Rick (Barbara) Sugarland, TX., Bob (Edvique), Cumming, Ga., Don (Jeanette), Windermere, FL. and Doug (Wendy)Glen Allen, VA. Also, Sue (Danny) Goss, sister to his wife Betty, 19 grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Donald was a veteran of World War II where he served in the United States Marines stationed in Guam. He was also a member of Shrine (Tigris Temple, Syracuse, NY), Masonic Temple and performed various volunteer positions. Services will be held Saturday, September 5th at 10:00 am at St Luke's Church, 4851 Apopka -Vineland Rd, Orlando, FL 32819 Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Edgewood Children's Ranch, 1451 Edgewood Ranch Rd, Orlando, Florida 32835.

M. Leigh Whitney


Mr. M. Leigh Whitney, 75, of Orlando went to be with Jesus, his Lord on Thursday morning, August 20th, 2009, after assuring and being re-assured that all of his children knew Christ. Leigh was born in Norfolk, VA, the son of the late Marion Leigh and Virginia (Morgan) Whitney. He moved to Central Florida from Massachusetts in 1978 and was a member of First Baptist Church of Central Florida. He was employed as a Quality Assurance Manager in the Aerospace Industry and later was an Account Executive at Philip Crosby Associates. He spent many years serving Christ as a Deacon, Bible study teacher and numerous other areas of service. Leigh leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 56 years, Billie (Gray) Whitney of Orlando; three daughters, Cheryl Harmon and husband Glenn of Melbourne, B.J. Zubli and husband Pete of Gotha, Ginny Michalski and husband Jim of Jacksonville, FL; four sons, Jim Whitney and wife Kathy of Hudson, NH, Rick Whitney and wife May of Ocoee, Tom Whitney and wife Sarah of Clermont, Dave Whitney and wife Brittany of Winter Garden, FL; brother, Rev. Norman Whitney of Graham, NC; 23 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The family will be receiving friends from 2-3p on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Central Florida followed by the service at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Dexter Johnson officiating. A private interment will be held at Winter Garden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

DeVere A. Sturm, Jr.


Mr. DeVere A. Sturm , Jr., 81, of Orlando. , passed away Sunday, August 9th, 2009. DeVere was born in Olean, NY on December 13, 1927, the son of the late DeVere A. and Phoebe (Kramer) Sturm Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy in WW II and was employed as an electrical engineer in the aerospace industry. DeVere was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Hole in One Club. He is preceded in death by his brother William (2/19/1992). He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Tamiko (Kato) Sturm of Orlando; daughter, Cynthia Sturm of Orlando, FL; brother, Ronald Sturm of Maryland; and devoted canine companion, Coco the Beagle. A Memorial Service will be held at Dobbs Funeral Home, Orlando, FL, at 1:00 PM on Thursday, August 13th, 2009.

Betty McCoy Poteat

Betty McCoy Poteat passed away peacefully, with her family by her side on Friday, July 31st. Betty was a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend. Betty will be missed by her family and friends whose lives were touched through her journey in life. She will be remembered for her fighting spirit in her fight with diabetes and heart disease. She was a loving, nurturing mother and a devoted loving wife. She was born on May 26, 1940 to Carl and Lillamae McCoy and grew up in Logan, West Virginia. She moved to Orlando, Florida in 1954. She leaves behind a loving, devoted husband, Eugene Poteat of Orlando; 3 sons, Ronald Powers of Orlando, Perry Dean Poteat of Ft. White, Donnie Poteat of Belmont, North Carolina; 1 daughter, Tavia Abernathy of Belmont, NC; 8 grandchildren, Ann Elise Poteat of Lake Butler, Trenton Powers of Orlando, Jessica Powers of Orlando, Shelby Powers of Orlando, Kevin Dean Poteat of Ft. White, Sarah Abernathy of Belmont, North Carolina, Amber Poteat of North Carolina, Richard Wade Poteat of Lake Butler; 3 great-grandchildren, Keaton Powers, Hayden Anderson and Jayden Powers and cousins, Peggy Ann and Ruth Ann.

The family will be receiving friends on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Dobbs Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow visitation at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Thomas Hensley officiating. Interment will follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations made in Betty Poteat's memory can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
