When she was younger, her home was often filled with the sounds of music, laughter, domino games, and large gatherings of family and friends enjoying delicious Caribbean food and “Café con Leche.”  She had a great love for her children, her children’s children, and the children of others as evidenced in her service as a foster parent in New York and Florida.  Some of her favorite pastimes included sewing, Bingo, fill-in puzzles, and watching her favorite action actor, Chuck Norris and the “Sabado Gigante” variety show on television. She traveled quite a bit with her husband, Juan, whom she affectionately called “Nito”, and lived in various states to include New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, the territory of Puerto Rico, and finally settling in Florida in the late 1980’s.  In her later years, she lived a quiet life in Central Florida with her youngest son, William.

Jim was raised and educated in Central Florida.  He was a graduate of Seabreeze High School, University of Central Florida, and Stetson Law School.  Jim began his legal profession as a prosecutor in the Office of the State Attorney in Volusia County. Discovering his heart was in finding the good in others, defending their rights, and giving them hope for their future, he opened a criminal defense law practice representing his clients with a great balance of professionalism and sympathy until his passing.

Jim grew up loving the water and spent his teenage years lifeguarding and surfing in Daytona Beach.  He enjoyed a very active life, running marathons, cycling, surfing, and traveling, but he found his greatest joy in his children. Jim lived his life knowing God was in control and had a plan/purpose for him. That purpose was to be a protector, provider, counselor and friend to his children.  Jace, Annie,  and Zoe were the light of his life and his true passion. For them, the depth of his love could not be measured.

We will continue to seek comfort in Jim's favorite verse: " For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11.  Jim fulfilled his purpose on earth and is now following a more glorious path with our Father in heaven.

Jim was a loving father, caring son, wonderful brother, and a great friend.  He will always be remembered and forever missed.

 I DID IT MY WAY
Well allow me to begin by thanking each and  every one of you whom have decided to join us here today for my going home service.  I was born Sylvia Cole on April 29, 1929, to Hugh and Clora Cole in the City of Colon, Republic of Panama.  We had a fairly large family that consisted of four boys and four girls; namely Gertrude Davey, Lucho Cole, Herbie Cole, Bertram Cole, Claudia Babb, Theda May Clark, all of whom have preceded me  home to be with the Lord.  I am survived by my Sister Marva Nuggent, and my youngest brother Merle Cole.
Theda, Marva and I really had some good times at our pokeno parties, I did not always win but I really enjoyed the quality time spent with my siblings.  As a child I attended Mrs. Archers School in the City of Colon, and was baptized in Christ Church.  There is where I came to know the Lord and accepted him as my Lord and Savior.  In 1954 I met and married my beloved husband and father of my children, Florencio Barbero, affectionately known as "Barnes".  Wow what a handsome gentlemen he was, he has preceded me and I hope we will meet again at the throne of our Lord.   I was fortunate and Blessed to have seven children, Aurelio (Tony), Marcelino, Sonia, Mario, Mirna, Marisela, and Marla, whom I loved dearly with all my heart.  From my children I was blessed with four beautiful grandchildren, Rochelle, Sharde, Daryl, and Tamara.  All whom I leave behind along with three Great Grandchildren to continue to life and always to remember you are neither less nor greater than anybody in life and with respect and dignity towards each other and strangers, will your paths be widen.  Always remember I love you all and this is not goodbye, but until we meet again.

I enjoyed many things in life, cooking my Easter Buns, going to the market to buy my favorite foods such as fish and watermelon, my plants in my garden, but I could never figure out why I could never get those rose bushes to catch, but most of all I enjoyed attending San Juan Episcopal Church, were each week I was fed the manna that my Lord had for me so that I could face yet another day.  Life was in no way or form easy for me or my family, we had to struggle through hard times, but as a mother and wife I had to do all that I could to push the family forward.  Many may not understand why and how I did things, but I simply had to do it my way.  Although the bells have rung and my name has been called, I regret nothing and give thanks to my Lord and Savior for every hour that I have spent on this earth with each of you, I love you and I must go now, trust in the Lord and he will direct your path as he has directed mine.

Roger Dale Tome

Firefighter Roger Dale Tome, 71, of Windermere, was out on his regular afternoon run on February 10, 2014 when he stepped into eternity. An active-duty firefighter for the last 52 years, Roger was an Assistant Fire Chief at NASA/Kennedy Space Center where served since December 1971. Roger began his career on the Orlando Fire Department in 1961 and served under Chief Paul Pennington and Chief Melvin Rivenbark. His friend G. Calvin Bookhardt, who died on duty in 1972, was possibly one of his greatest mentors, teaching him how to live a life worth living.

Roger faithfully served his country as a medic in the Ranger Battalion of the U.S. Army Reserves during the Vietnam Era. A graduate of Edgewater High School C/O 1960, he studied Political Science at Rollins while beginning his career in the fire service.

Named to the list of Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Program LEGENDS, he is one of the few people to have worked at the Space Center during the entire Shuttle Transport System history. Roger bravely served on the first Astronaut Emergency Rescue team and served as its team leader for the shuttle program. Additional achievements include serving on Apollo, Space Lab, and all shuttle missions by heading emergency rescue operations at contingency landing sites in North Africa.

Roger was known to all for his smile, laughter and warmth. He never knew a stranger and treated every person as if they were the most important person on earth. He fell in love with the Magic Kingdom from the beginning. It was his favorite date destination with Judi  Underwood Tome and the place where he knew he had fallen in love. He delighted in providing his children and grandchildren with annual passes and continued to enjoy Disney World throughout his life.

A long time resident of Windermere, Roger grew up fishing the Butler Chain of Lakes and made up his mind to raise his family there. He loved running along Main Street and his end of the run reward was a stop at Allen’s Creamery for coffee, also the place he enjoyed the grandchildren from his favorite bench.

He grew up at Miller Memorial Baptist Church and later joined First Baptist Church of Central Florida (formerly FBC-Pine Hills) where he met the love of his life, Judi. He taught first grade Sunday School for many years and in recent years kept an eye on his elderly friends and loved his choir and pastors.
